A day without cream

Plan: Making Banoffee Pie
People involved: 2 crazy friends and me
Roadblock: There was no cream

2

I kid you not. We looked in at least 8 shops. None had any cream.
Trauma. Shock. Horror. Despair. Over-reaction.

2

But we were determined. We wanted to make Banoffee Pie.
And that is what we did.

2

We worked with what we had.

2

2

We crushed digestive biscuits.

2

2

We made dulce de leche (caramel).

2

2

We drank Hazelnut Baileys. (This is an optional step, but it greatly enhances the recipe making process.)

2

2

We chopped bananas.

2

2

We layered.

2

2

Not one layer.
But, two thick gorgeous layers of both banana and caramel.

2

We still had no cream though.

2

So…
Wait for it…

2

2

We used good ol’ vanilla ice cream!

2

And then we ate. And it was good.

2

2

The grainy saltiness of the biscuits offset the general creamy sweetness very well.

2

The caramel was thick and exquisite, though in retrospect I can say (with a heavy heart) that one layer would have sufficed and would have also been less heart-attack inducing.
However, if you have an extreme sweet tooth and absolutely no history of diabetes- go right ahead 🙂

2

In the end, we did it 🙂
Banoffee pie success.

2

So now you know how to make Banoffee if you’re ever without cream, though I pray that you never suffer such great tragedy.

2

Have a happy cream-filled day you’ll 🙂

    1. yes..just cook the milkmaid over a long period of time.
here we did in in the oven, in a bowl, over a water bath for about 3 hours.
Or you could just bunk the unopened tin into a big bowl of water, and keep it on the stove for about 4 hours, simmering. keep filling more water as it evaporates, and wait for the tin to cool down completely before opening it. Be careful, caramel can be very hot!

  1. I made it tooo. The crust separated from my caramel, bananas, and cream layer, but that’s ok, i stuck it back on and dug in. it was reeeallly sweet. But sigh! you are right. it’s perfect. Oh! and I used low fat cream so whipping it was toughie, but I added vanilla essence to it. Bliss!

  2. This looks really good! I have never heard of this before and will have to look up the recipe and try it!

Thanks for stopping by my blog! 🙂

  3. I’m sorry you had to go through such a travesty, but honestly, the ice cream version sounds tastier anyway 🙂 Awesome pictures, as always!
